Bridge to Success

Help for prisoners and their families before and after release

Helping men and women successfully reenter their communities

The Bridge to Success program provides services for individuals who are currently incarcerated and those who are transitioning out of incarceration and into the community. It is a holistic reentry program that provides a variety of therapeutic programming, case management and employment assistance on a referral basis.

The goal of the program is to help men and women work through personal trauma, reconnect with children and restore family relationships, find housing, recover from addiction and substance abuse issues, develop job skills, increase their personal and work satisfaction and improve their parenting skills.

Qualification Requirements and Referrals

In order to qualify for the program, clients must be under some sort of supervision by the Indiana Department of Corrections and live in Marion County or or one of the surrounding counties.

Additionally, all potential clients must have a relationship with a child under the age of 18. This could be their biological child, but he/she could also be the child of a partner, a grandchild, a niece or nephew with whom the identified client is close, or even a younger sibling. The child must also live in a household that would qualify for TANF services based on income. The identified client does not necessarily have to live in the same household as the child, they must only have a relationship with the child.


Services Offered to Clients and their Families

Therapeutic Services

We offer cognitive behavioral groups to address issues with substance use and relapse, anger management groups and parenting groups. We can also provide individual, couples and family counseling.

Employment Assistance

We have an employment specialist who will help program participants find a job. Staff will also offer additional support to help clients keep their jobs.

Case Management

Clients and families can work with a case manager to connect the clients and their families with the resources they need

Look Up &Hope: Strengthening Families Affected by Incarceration

This program is based on our past Look Up and Hope program, which was highlighted as a promising practice in Annie E. Casey’s Kids Count Policy Report of 2014.

Our mission is to break the cycle of poverty for children affected by incarceration and walk beside them as they reach their full potential. Since 1896, Volunteers of America has been serving prisoners and their families. Reform and redemption were core values promulgated by founders Maud and Ballington Booth. Maud believed in a holistic approach when working with people touched by incarceration, and it is in that vein Volunteers of America advances with its Look Up and Hope: Strengthening Families Affected by Incarceration initiative.
